I am of the opinion that the recirculated air in hospitals could help spread viral infections. Hospitals in California/Italy are prohibited by code from recirculating the air from emergency area waiting, isolation rooms, recovery rooms and a lot of other rooms like toilets, soiled utility rooms, custodian rooms and laboratories where the recirculated air might be hazardous. The air is still recirculated from Intensive Care Units, Critical Care Units and Operating Rooms.
I am seeing in the news that COVID 19 patients are treated in ICUs.
There are rooms called “Airborne Infection Isolation / Treatment / Exam Rooms” where the air is also not recirculated. These rooms were typically used for T.B patients. I don’t think that there are enough of these rooms.
Most of the central air handling systems in California/Italy have 100% outdoor air economizer systems.
If a hospital has such a system, they should manually override the controls and force the system to operate with 100% outdoor air to reduce air borne infections, during this pandemic.
The Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations expressed the same idea in this publication.
